timeandbananas asked: Saw your rant - not all of us are bitter, I promise! I love both the Classic series and the New series. It's interesting because what I run into most often is fans hating on the Classic series for being campy or nonsensical. The best plan would be for everyone to lay down their arms.
Oh, don’t worry. I am well aware not all classic Who fans have this problem. My post was directed at only those who do. I guess I should have been more clear in the post about that. :)
But yes, I agree. Haters on both sides need to calm down.
standingonthetoesofgiants asked: To be honest, what annoys us Classic Whovians more is when people claim to be the ultimate fan, they love all the Doctors etc etc- then it turns out they had no idea the series started in 1963. It's the lack of acknowledgement of all that history which is most annoying. You are still a Whovian if you watch and like the new series but have never seen the classic series, just as long as you realise that the programme wasn't invented by Steven Moffat. Change is good- but we musn't ignore the past.
Ok. I can understand and accept that reason. That would annoy me as well. I have no problem at all with fans being annoyed with people like that.
So I have to ask the Whovian community about classic WHO fans. And no, I’m talking about all of them when I ask, but why are classic WHO fans so cynical and demeaning when it comes to “NuWho” and its fans as they call it? I’ve never seen a fandom that’s so damn bitter about it’s own fucking…
Think it’s a bit of a generalization to say that really, because most of us Classic Who fans adore both series. The reason we have to really separate the fandoms is because if we post on the DW tag it disappears amongst hundreds of posts about 9,10 or 11 and we kind of need a little place to appreciate the old stuff so sometimes we do class them separately.
We can only think of a very small minority who are judgmental to NUwho and its fans. We’re all at different stages of watching both Classic and New and no one we know here ever really judges anyone else (Except the odd comment) and most Classic fans on here actually started with New Who so it’d be rather silly to look down on New who fans if that’s how you started because we all have to start somewhere.
There may be cynicism sometimes from the Classic fans. We don’t care whether people haven’t seen classic who but it’s when they disregard it. We’re a First Doctor blog, we have spiteful things on the tags everyday and people who choose to skip over his era because it’s black and white, that’s not good on their part is it? Why are we often called elitist when some New fans refuse to watch something in black and white because it’s ‘old’. It’s not fair to keep using this elitism thing when a Classic fan says something against new who. More times than not any cynical stuff is because we desperately adore the Classic series and are trying to defend it and get it out there into the Whoniverse.
It’s tough being an appreciation blog for an era that a lot of fans don’t even want to watch and if we get a bit stroppy about that from time to time, we can’t help it because it gets you down when something as important in the history of a programme is deemed less important than the newer stuff.
And there’s the assumption that as Classic fans we can’t like the new stuff. Our third fave companion is Rose, we love Nine and Ten and we know people whose favourite Doctor is Eleven and fave companions are Donna and Rory or whatever. Since when did it seem that our Classic fandom has elitism towards new who when we all watch that too? The people who hate for hating are such a small minority and there’s just as many people who do it the other way round, we’re not excusing it but there’s nothing wrong with preferring to watch the Classic. If someone doesn’t like New Who isn’t that fair too? Seeing as you say it’s ok to skip the classics if they want to be a fan.
I understand all of that. I am not speaking of the people who prefer classic over the new series. I am completely fine with that. I’m only speaking about fans that act elitist only because they have seen classic. Like I said in the beginning of the post, I am not applying this to everyone. I’ve just seen a lot of “NuWho” rants going around on Tumblr lately.
Ok, that’s a very small amount of people. Sorry you’ve encountered that. We don’t see that very often, mainly we see things posted about all eras and that is positive. Maybe you didn’t mean everyone but it always feels like if you have watched a lot of Classic, you end up with this ‘elitist’ label if you dare to say anything about the newer stuff. We’re just saying there’s always hate on both sides of the fandoms, we’ve seen a lot of demeaning stuff from ‘nuwho’ fans.
Well that’s exactly my point. Why is there “sides” when it’s all the same damn story? I only started with the newer series to see what is was like, but I have started classic. But to me, it’s all the same.
There isn’t really sides. we consider to be a fan of Doctor Who but if we say we’re fans of Doctor Who, people assume we mean only 2005 onwards so we have to specify. We realise it’s all the same show but we need it separate so the Classic series can get some appreciation. There must be so many more blogs devoted to the newer series so we sometimes split them up for it to be easier. It’s all the same to us but if that’s true then we wonder why some people don’t want to try the classics eventually. Oh well.
I think the length intimidates people. People have ADD these days. It takes a lot just to get some people to watch six seasons of something. At least that’s why I assume.
